Ogury’s Spotlight Series | Nobu Hirohama

On paper, Nobu Hirohama is Ogury’s New Business Lead, Japan. But his work goes far beyond growing the business. Through Ogury’s Spotlight Series, we explore his perspective on the Japanese advertising landscape, what it takes to build trusted partnerships, and the mindset behind long-term success in this unique market.

What attracted you to Ogury and made you want to join the team?

What drew me to Ogury was its ability to help advertisers not only build stronger brands, but also develop a deeper understanding of their audiences. That combination of impactful branding capabilities and rich audience insights is incredibly compelling to me, especially at a time when marketers are looking for more meaningful ways to connect with consumers.

In a market like Japan, where advertisers are increasingly focused on looking beyond surface-level signals, I believe this approach will become even more important in the years ahead.

Can you tell us a little about your role and what you’ll be focusing on?

I lead new business development in Japan, working closely with brands and agencies to build strategic partnerships and further grow Ogury’s presence in the market. A big part of my role is understanding the challenges advertisers face today and helping them find impactful ways to engage consumers in an increasingly complex digital landscape.

In practice, that means working with clients to uncover new opportunities by combining strong brand storytelling with actionable audience insights that support their marketing strategies and business goals.

You’ve spent several years in Japan’s advertising industry. What makes this market particularly unique to you?

Japan is a very trust-driven market, where long-term relationships truly matter. Partnerships tend to be built over time, and there is a strong emphasis on reliability and mutual respect.

At the same time, brands here are extremely thoughtful about brand equity and the consumer experience. That creates a unique environment where creativity and precision go hand in hand, and where great attention is paid to how brands show up and connect with their audiences.

From your experience, what do brands and agencies in Japan value most in a partner?

I’d say trust, consistency, and a genuine understanding of their business. In Japan, strong partnerships are built over time, and brands and agencies value partners who take the time to truly understand their priorities and approach collaboration with a long-term perspective.

The most valued partners are those who go beyond simply providing solutions and instead work closely with clients — sharing ideas, thinking strategically, and supporting their brand growth.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing to unwind and recharge?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, playing golf, and exploring new places. Whether it’s being outdoors or discovering somewhere new, those moments help me switch off, recharge, and come back with a fresh perspective.

And finally, what’s your persona?
